3 day plant purification ‘cleanse’

Let me start by saying I’m not a huge fan of  ‘cleanses’. Though you can lose a lot of weight on poopular “cleanses”, generally, these type of diets are super unhealthy. I mean, you can lose weight by locking yourself in a closet and not eating or drinking for a week – but even the most insane dieters understand that’s not exactly healthy.

So why would I put together something called a “cleanse”‘? Well.. because this really is a true, purifying cleanse of the body from all the regular crud we all eat (yes even me). Based on many popular books today about plant based nutrition, eating purely things that are from the ground (and which haven’t been modified) really and truly is a cleaning out of your system. And that’s really all there is to this “diet” — eat vegetables, fruits, raw nuts, legumes (beans), and ‘unmodified’ grains – only – for three whole days. All food must be in its natural form, not modified (e.g. no soy meats, no vegetable/fruit juices or sorbet… just pure veg and fruit. No nut milks. Keep canned beans to a minimum – make the from scratch if you can).

Why only 3 days if it’s so great then? Well.. because we live in the real world, and to try to steer clear of all meats, dairy, grains, sugars, alcohol, well that would just be cruel and unusual. It requires making all your own food, and if you work and/or have a family, you know that’s super hard. Also, because if you know anything about chemistry, your body will over time adjust to this new way of eating, making it harder and harder every day to eat any of the stuff in the real world. Also (ok this is my last point I promise!) it is pretty hard to get a decent number of calories (not to mention protein) on this diet. Typically, you’ll hit 1200-1500 at most. That’s not much if your working out and / or active (which I know you are!).

In any event, this ‘diet’, no matter if you do it for 3 or more days – is nothin’ but healthy! I promise you that. You can repeat the 3-day cleanse after a couple of weeks of ‘normal’ eating, and I guarantee you every time you do the 3-day stint, your body will feel clean, good, oh and you’ll probably drop those pesky “final 5 lbs” we’re always whining about. I do, every time!

So what do I eat? Here’s the list of my favorite on this 3-day “plant purification”:

Vegetables: Squash, Kale, Spinach, (NO STARCHY veg like potatoes!!)

Fruit: ALL, generally i have only 1 per variety per day (e.g. 1 apple, 1 orange, 1 banana, etc..) I generally have fruit for breakfast and 2 snacks

Grains: 1 per day. Quinoa or cous cous

Legumes: ALL beans (black, chickpeas, kidney, pinto.. any!) This is your source of protein!

Nuts: Maximum 10-12 per day. Almonds, Walnuts are best (RAW! unroasted and unsalted!)

All spices, no oils. No milk (even soy/almond). Vegetable broth is ok, no other sauces. No fake meats. Try not to eat canned beans/vegetables/fruits.

Meal ideas:

  1. Butternut squash curry with chickpeas and cauliflower (see past blog),
  2. Bean chili with red pepper and sweet onion,
  3. Lentil stew
  4. Brocolli soup (using vegetable broth)
  5. Vegetable stir fry with quinoa

That’s it!! Pretty simple, and that’s the point. Get your body back to nature! And see how great it feels.
