Eggs are one of the world’s best foods. Easy to prepare, eggs are a great source of high-quality protein, providing 6 grams of protein for only about 70 calories per egg. Many studies have shown that eating eggs for breakfast promote healthy weight and even weight loss.
Though many dieters and body builders stick to the egg white, as it contains about half of the protein (3g) for only a fraction of the calories (16), and zero fat! And, because years of recommendations indicated we should shy away from the yolk for fear it caused cholesterol. But more recent evidence suggests that the yolk may in fact be the most healthy part of the egg.
Egg yolks contain Choline, in fact are the most rich source of it (soybeans come second). Choline is necessary for healthy cell membranes in all of your body, and regulates homocysteine levels (high levels of homocysteine has been linked to coronary heart disease, strokes, dementia in later life, diabetes, osteoporosis and pregnancy problems). Choline has also been to linked with preserving memory. Egg yolks do contain about 4.7 g fat and 200 mg cholesterol, so eat them in moderation.
So while body builders and dieters alike may benefit from a focus on the egg white to up the protein for such low calories/fat, we should all be sure to include a yolk or two in our day for optimum health!
