Make the most of your workout!
Ok so I wasn’t very good about blogging from the road – we were kind of in the middle of NOWHERE, with off and on mobile reception – so forgive me.
The trip was amazing. In total we rode 205 miles over 3 days – luckily the first to days were flat or slightly downhill (at 71 miles each day), and only the last day of 63 miles included some small hills.
Day 1 found us waking at 5am, to rain! Were we not in the California desert we wouldn’t have been so shocked – and of course even the sole rider from Washington state didn’t even pack rain gear! But with a little (ahem!) fortitude along the way from our road crew offering a shot of scotch, we managed to press on and finish the 71.5 miles by 4pm. Cruising past the Salton Sea was decptively beautiful landscape. A lot of laughs, one rider fall, and a very early night and we were done with Day 1.
We awoke on Day 2 surprisingly not that sore! Only the expected neck and shoulder cramping, but nothing to stop us from proceeding to our next 71 miles. We rode through funny way out towns, more laughs and a quirky RV campsite met us at the end. Thank goodness again for our sole road crew (my hubby) who met us along the way with pancakes (!) and subway sandwiches for lunch.
On our final day, we were still charged up and sad to know our journey was soon to end. The road back on this final day was one of the best – after a short 10 miles on a busy freeway, we were out on open road in farm country. These are places you only speed by in a car, if you ever took backroads. We saw farmers and country people – those who are away from it all and seem to like it that way. Our final meal on the tour was at a cute little mexican place in old town La Quinta, followed by a fairly short final leg back to Palm Springs.
It’s quite an experience to ride all day for 3 days straight. I didn’t exactly “train” for it, and didn’t feel left behind. If you have the opportunity to do something like this, I highly recommend it! It’s these experiences that you will always remember.
